LIGO Exploration Center
LIGO Hanford Observatory, Caltech
Museum EXP led the vision, strategy, and delivery of this 5,000-square-foot immersive, hands-on experience completed in 2026. Starting with a 2021 Visitor Experience Plan that helped secure project funding, we oversaw every detail from ideation to installation including comprehensive project management, creative direction, and content development.
We created 28 interactive exhibits (and refurbished 8 more) that spark curiosity, demystify complex scientific principles, and invite visitors to explore how LIGO’s detectors measure gravitational waves from colliding black holes millions of light years from Earth. Developed in close collaboration with LIGO’s scientists and grounded in real data, the exhibits culminate in a detection simulation that mirrors the collaboration and precision at the heart of LIGO’s work. The project showcases Museum EXP’s ability to translate complex concepts into engaging, memorable experiences for students, families, and even visiting researchers.

Why this project excites us:
Our team geeked out about translating Nobel Prize–winning, universe-shifting science into hands-on moments, empowering visitors to think and work like real gravitational wave scientists.
